Life at sea is hard, and inevitably there are casualties. Men come ashore needing help—someone to talk to, someone who will give practical advice, listen to their problems and do something positive about them. They may just need a hot meal and a bed for the night; they may need support spiritually. And there are the older, retired seafarers—homeless, and often without family, money or possessions—who need somewhere to live.

All these casualties of the sea are cared for today at the Queen Victoria Seamen's Rest, or the ‘Queen Vic' as it has been known for over 150 years.

Founded by devout Methodists in 1843, to minister to seafarers in need, regardless of their nationality or creed, the ‘Queen Vic' is a home that offers them support, security and Christian care. It stands today as the Seamen's Mission of the Methodist Church.

Conditions change, but the need remains, and we still need your support. Could the congregation of your church perhaps make a special fundraising effort for us next Sea Sunday? Could you yourself please make a gift to us, or leave to us a part of your estate? If so, please see below for the necessary wording to use on your ‘Gift Aid Declaration'.

Hundreds of beached and shipwrecked seamen will bless you for it.

Gift Aid

Chancellor Gordon Brown is trying to encourage charitable giving by making it easier for charities to recover tax on charitable donations.

If you pay Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax, even if you already Covenant, by returning this Gift Aid form to the QVSR our Mission will further benefit at no extra cost to you.

In order to qualify, you must be paying an amount of Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax at least equivalent to the tax which the QVSR reclaims on your donations in the tax year. (Currently 28p for each £1 you donate)

You can cancel at any time (for example, should your tax circumstances change) by notifying us. If you pay tax at the higher rate you can claim further tax relief on your self assessment tax return.

Please send this form, or a copy of it with your donation, to the Chief Executive of QVSR.
