Gordon’s Nordic Challenge 2026
Never one to shy away from a formidable test of endurance, mariner Gordon Foot MNM FNI is preparing to undertake his next major expedition — an 8-day trek within the Arctic Circle — in support of QVSR.
Having already summited Kilimanjaro, completed the Costa Rica Eco River Trail by foot, kayak and bike, run multiple marathons and skydived from altitude, Gordon is no stranger to pushing physical and mental limits. This August, however, he will take on what may be his most demanding endeavour yet — all to raise funds and awareness for seafarers in need.
Travelling first to Abisko, Sweden, Gordon will embark on a multi-terrain trek across Lapland, finishing in Narvik, Norway. The route will involve sustained climbs, mixed trail, rough ground, rock and river crossings — all while carrying a 14kg backpack.
Each night, he will seek shelter in remote mountain huts before continuing northwards across the Arctic landscape. While these huts will provide welcome respite from the elements, the experience is intended to echo — in a small but symbolic way — the importance of safe shelter. For seafarers facing crisis or homelessness, access to secure, dignified accommodation is not an expedition feature; it is a lifeline. Gordon’s journey across the Arctic will be physically demanding, but it also serves as a reminder that a safe haven should never be uncertain for those who have spent their careers at sea.
Why This Matters to the Maritime Sector
At the heart of this expedition is a deeply personal commitment. After a distinguished 40-year career as an Offshore Client Representative within the maritime industry, Gordon understands first-hand the pressures and realities of life at sea. Having also experienced significant hardship earlier in life, he is passionate about supporting those who find themselves in crisis.
His goal is to raise both funds and visibility for QVSR and QVSR Seafarers Centres — organisations that play a critical role in supporting active and retired seafarers across the UK.
Through six Seafarers Centres in key port locations — Tilbury, London Gateway, Immingham, Bristol and Felixstowe — alongside high-quality accommodation in East London, QVSR provides practical assistance, pastoral care and safe spaces for those far from home. For retired seafarers and veterans experiencing homelessness, its accommodation offers warmth, dignity, community and the chance to rebuild.
QVSR is currently fundraising to develop six additional en-suite rooms at its East India Dock Road facility, increasing capacity to 180 residents and extending support to even more members of the maritime community in need.
Gordon has set a fundraising target of £8,000 and is already past the halfway mark. Every contribution will directly support QVSR’s frontline services.
Preparing at Sea
In preparation for the trek — while still working at sea — Gordon is training daily on a treadmill and undertaking intensive strength and conditioning work to ensure he is ready for the physical demands ahead.
